Black Rock Nov 14,2009

It was November and we felt the hiking itch, we can do another we thought. We hooked up wth the Calgary Outdoor Club and headed out to Black Rock Mountain. There were 13 of us. Black Rock was in our old stomping 4x4grounds ....Waiparous.This time we were hiking though. The sky was so blue and amazing! A great view of the mountains to the west included the impressive Devil’s Head. The temperature was quite comfortable at the base. The trail is steep in some places and required a bit of scrambling to reach the top. The view of the Devil's Head and Ghost River region was worth it though. As we were ascending, the temperature was turning nasty. The wind was horribly cold. I was frozen. I had to borrow down gloves and a an extra jacket to warm up.No one really expected how cold it would be with it being such a beautiful sunny day but everyone was so nice sharing what they could to keep warm. All 13 of us fit in the abandoned station to get out of the wind and have lunch. That lasted almost half an hour. The temperature inside was -10°c according to the MEC thermometer… but with the wind chill it was brutal!!! One quick group pose and the race was on to get down and out of the wind. Man, I don't think I have seen a group descend so fast. We were back at the truck in 1-1/2 hours. Fantastic time with a fantastic group. This is another hike I would definately do but in warmer weather. Getting accross the river(if it's not dry) to the trailhead with the vehicles would be a challenge though. We would need to add 3.5 kms each way to the trip if not.
